The City of San Jose outlawed smoking in all of its parks in 2007. In attempts to compel compliance of the ordinance, however, the city launched an educational strategy in January of this year. The intent was to put a positive spin on the law in order to gain cooperation from residents and visitors.

San José was founded in 1777, and began as a farming community when it supported Spanish military installations in Monterey and San Francisco. The city was the state’s first civilized settlement, the state’s first incorporated city and the state’s first capital when California gained statehood in 1850. Of course, that was later changed to Sacramento.
