On September 19, the San Francisco Tenants Union (SFTU) celebrated 30 years of keeping thousands of SF families in housing that they could afford.  The event started off with counseling stations scattered throughout the city.  When the union was originally organized those 30 years ago, organizers simply set up tables on street corners to inform everyone of their rights as tenants and to assist individuals in addressing issues with their landlords.

We always knew San Francisco was a little more progressive but even they surprised me on this one! Last week San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone announced that city residents can now make 311 customer service requests or complaints using the popular micro blogging site Twitter. San Francisco’s motto: Gold in peace, iron in war!

The mantra is illustrated on the city’s most current flag, which shows a Phoenix rising out of the fire.  The meaning directly relates to the two earthquakes and six fires that nearly destroyed the city.  San Francisco bounced back, though, and is here today to tell a story of persistence and resilience.
