Founded in 1783, Clarksville is known as the “oldest American town in the Northwest Territory.” It was named after General George Rogers Clark, an American Revolutionary War figure. With a population of over 22,000, the town sits sleepily on the Ohio River banks. Just four miles north of the border town of Louisville, Clarksville is home to some amazing artifacts and institutions.
The world’s second-largest timekeeping piece, the Colgate clock, is found right here. It is a bold reminder of the Colgate-Palmolive Plant that closed its doors in 2008. Clarksville residents are determined to keep the clock right where it is. The clock is visible all the way from downtown Louisville.
The Falls of the Ohio are located in Clarksville at Exit 0. Fossil beds older than your grandma are exposed in this natural phenomenon. At 386 million years old, the Devonian fossil beds are thought to be some of the largest of naturally exposed beds in the world.
The fossil beds provide year-round interest. August through October is the best time to visit, though. The Ohio River is down at that time, and more of the 220 acres of beds are exposed and accessible. You cannot, however, collect any fossils from the site.
The town currently hosts around 600 businesses. Here, you’ll find residential areas, business, old historic sites and new shopping areas. Clarksville is expanding its sewer system, streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks and adding a number of storms sewers to better accommodate its residents.
Lapping Park provides sports, recreation and theater entertainment with a softball field, golf course, hiking trails, shelter house and amphitheater. Clarksville Little Theater and Derby Dinner Playhouse provide indoor theater entertainment. The dinner playhouse is the only one in the area.
Interestingly, the Texas Roadhouse was birthed here and still sits in the Green Tree Mall, its original location. River Falls Mall hosts the second largest Bass Pro store in the nation.
Famous people associated with Clarksville include NASCAR driver Frank Kimmel who was born in Clarksville. The Falls of the Ohio was the place where John James Audobon sketched many of his bird fieldbook drawings.
