Kidney dialysis diva DaVita is spying out two locations in Denver’s Lower Historic Downtown (LoDo) district, but also considering a custom build. Relocating the company’s corporate headquarters, DaVita is moving to Denver from El Segundo, California.
Local real estate professionals noted that DaVita is considering a location on 16th Street and the Gates Corporation building on Wewatta Street. A plot on 16th Street and two parcels near Union Station are sites DaVita is considering for new construction.
According to the company’s CEO Ken Thiry, DaVita decided earlier this year to call Denver its new home due to the city’s central location, lower operating expenses and lower living expenses. Another financial boost to the company is that it will receive incentive dollars from the state relative to total investments and the number of new jobs created by the company in Colorado.
Colorado provides a 3.8 percent income tax credit up to 5 years for businesses that choose Colorado over other states and create a minimum of 20 new jobs. A state official indicated that, in addition to the state incentive, other tax credits are provided by local cities and counties.
According to industry professionals, DaVita is considered the crème de la crème in the kidney treatment industry. Not without its critics, however, a group of Colorado Springs nephrologists filed suit earlier this year in federal court against the company. Primary allegations were that DaVita provided improper patient care and that the company required the nephrologists to exclusively use DaVita clinics.
Founded in 1990, DaVita is a Fortune 500 company with over $5.5 billion in revenue, and currently has in excess of 32,000 employees and 1,500 outpatient clinics.
