Minneapolis has a long-standing, two decades old, in fact, garden recognition program that celebrates gardens displayed by pretty much anybody who has landscaping. Businesses, residents, public buildings and community buildings are all considered for garden recognition by Metro Blooms. The program’s intent is to inspire, encourage and promote community pride and beautification. Environment leadership is also an aspect recognized in the efforts of the city’s area gardeners.
This is a great way for citizens to celebrate garden displays in the community. Is there a particular garden or landscape that has caught your eye? Maybe one you’ve seen on the way to work, on a walk or train or bike ride? Nominate your favorite garden display for recognition by Metro Blooms. The 2009 Garden Recognition Program is underway and they are looking for nominations.
To submit a nomination, either complete the online form available at http://metroblooms.org/nominate.php, or request that a nomination form be mailed to you by contacting Julie Thelen at (651) 337-1449.
Garden evaluations have already begun, so you better get yours in soon.. Hennepin County Master Gardeners are the judges this year.
More than 1,500 gardens were recognized by Metro Blooms in 2008. A private non-profit organization, Metro Blooms partners with local businesses, governments, watershed districts and professional associations to promote exceptional environmental garden and landscape projects.
In 1968, Minneapolis City Council established an annual project that the Committee on Urban Environment sponsored, which grew (no pun intended!) into the current Metro Blooms’ garden recognition program.
Programs like these are factors that often determine whether people move to a certain city. The sale of real estate is directly impacted by these kinds of activities. These are the same considerations businesses evaluate before signing leases for commercial property in particular areas.
In addition, community pride is typically weighted by organizations, like Money Magazine, Next Generation Consulting, MSN Money and other entities when ranking cities for livability and attraction.
In my humble opinion, Minneapolis is light years ahead of many other major cities when it comes to community pride.
We here at Roost salute your city’s efforts!
