Laconia Area Community Land Trust (LACLT) was named the Champion in Action® for the second quarter of 2009 by station WMUR-TV and Citizens Bank New Hampshire (CBNH). LACLT is most noted for its stellar assistance to Lakes Region families with low- to moderate-income. The trust helps those families achieve financial self-sufficiency by developing permanent affordable housing opportunities.
A $25,000 grant will be awarded to the trust, along with media coverage, promotional support and extensive volunteer support. CBNH President Cathleen Schmidt stated that the bank is pleased to join the station in the award and proud to contribute to the trust’s success.
Designed to recognize and provide support to non-profit groups that contribute to New Hampshire communities, the Champion in Action selects a new “champion” every quarter. Champions are identified among diverse arenas of social service areas.
WMUR-TV’s General Manager Jeff Bartlett says that sharing in the champion program gives the station a great sense of pride. He further stated that the station is pleased to assist with supporting organizations that show strong commitment to making a difference in the lives of New Hampshire residents. He said that LACLT is a true champion.
More than $32 million has been invested into the community by the trust, improving neighborhoods throughout the area. Laconia’s gateway to downtown received a major makeover by LACLT in 2004 when the trust revitalized an old abandoned factory into 18 affordable housing units.
