Roost Says Bye Bye Beta – Hello Something Wow

When was the last time you got excited about a search engine? 1998? Okay so maybe we are not the all mighty Google but we think we have just raised the bar when it comes to real estate search.

After a little more than a year, we are officially coming out of beta, introducing the new Roost.com and hopefully putting a little fun back into searching for your perfect home.

What is new you ask?

Well for starters you will probably notice that the old orange Rooster is gone! We have grown up and brought a more sophisticated look and feel to the site which should match up well with what you’ll find under the hood.  Maybe we’re biased, but we’re pretty confident that we’ve made an already easy to use real estate search site even simpler and drastically more powerful.

In terms of functionality, first up is our new search widget, which is something you’ll encounter when you first hit the new Roost.com. You can now immediately set the basic parameters of price, beds and bath in the city of your choice to see all the available MLS listings, new homes and FSBOs in the more than 45 markets that we currently serve.  You can also use this same “search widget” to quickly search for foreclosures nationally. Coupled with this search widget is our enhanced search filters. You now have all the relevant filters in one easy to use place with sliders built in for the standard price, beds and baths and more specialized search criteria such as year built and days on market. And we’ve updated the price function to allow you to now enter your own custom range.

Check out this video on how this new “search widget” gets you relevant results right away and how you can narrow your search even more with our improved search filters:

Roost has also made getting the details of the homes much easier by integrating a stylish and information rich detail page for each MLS listing. We chock these detail pages full of all the information you need to have while perusing the listings coupled with all the available photos, a Google map with integrated street view, comparable sales and one of the most useful mortgage calculators around. All of this helps you quickly scan the listing so you can speedily make a decision if this is one you might have an interest in previewing.

Check out this video to that shows you how cool a detail page really can be.

Even though the search widget, new updated filters and custom detail pages are cool, what we’re proudest of is our “Expand the Map” functionality. This allows you to let either the listings or the map be the hero of your experience at any given time. We’re willing to bet that when you “Expand the Map” for that first time and start playing, you’re going to say “wow, that’s cool.”

Check out this video that shows you how ‘Expand the Map” works:

This is what Alex Chang, Roost’s CEO, had to say about the updated website:

“Thanks to everyone out there for all the great feedback during our beta period over the last year.  I’m thrilled to see that reflected in this major update to Roost – highly integrated mapping, no more clicking out to view details & photos, and so much more.  This is a big step forward for our company and we have so many more exciting things in the works for this year…stay tuned!”

Because we are a company that is built on listening to customer feedback, we did more of that than ever when deciding to overhaul a pretty darn good site. With direct feedback from users and focus groups, the Roost site was retooled to offer consumers a real estate search site that we feel is one of the most advanced in the marketplace. Couple that with our unparalleled comprehensive data and information and you have a force to be reckoned with.

We really hope you will be impressed with what we have developed and would love to hear your feedback so we can continue to improve. Check us out at www.roost.com.

  • We are looking for homebuyers on the oregon coast,so many price reductions i would wish they would call??
  • You missed a lot of listings in the Tama Bay area. Are you talking to PRO or do you take individual listings from agents?

  • Hi Martha,

Are you speaking of Tampa itself? I show that we have 6604 listings in Tampa. What cities are we discussing? We are working with the Mid Florida MLS. Is PRO a different MLS that serves the Tampa Bay area? We do not take listings from agents. We try to get everything directly from the MLS that serves the area.

PRO (Pinellas Realtors Orgnization) is a different MLS that copperates with GTAR. Cities include St Petersburg, Clearwater, Largo, DunedinTarpon Springs, etc
  • Great new sight. The new UI you've chosen works really well. Very easy to use also. Keep up the good work.
  • Thanks Chad. We put a lot of thought and effort into this redesign and we are glad you like it. Keep us updated if you have any more thoughts.

Not efficient .... it is too slow. I'm running windows professional 2000. I wait some minutes to just get the page unfrozen. It's a mess. I could not get results hsown. there's one window for parameters that does no close after hitting close buttom unlimited times, so results are hidden below.
why not provide two interfaces one basic for older computers and an advanced one for those who like.
wasted much time on this interface without any results.......................................................................
  • Hi David,

Thanks for your comments. We have worked on the speed issue and have made huge leaps in that area over the last week. I would love to have you try again and let us know if you see any improvement. We are testing on all types of systems, operating systems and connection speeds and haven't experienced the problems you speak of but we want to make it the best experience possible. Please reach out to me here or email me directly at derek.overbey@roost.com to let me know if you are still experiencing issues.

I like the new look much better, its easy on the eye, very clean. But the search is questionable. For Example, When I click on a listing I like, I tried clicking on it several times before I realized it appeared in the lower right hand corner...Something you may want to change. Also Iike the interim page that flashes through all the major Brokers names (Re/Max, Coldwell, Weichert etc.) Nice touch by adding the Broker names too on the listing page. (Rt.Side)

I would definitely recommend a Private label foreclosure.com API which they offer, with your custom Roost Header/Footer it blows away the realquest.com link your using and includes FSBO's.

    Good Luck & Nice Work!
  • Hi Mary,

Thanks for your comments. We are currently working on a better call out of the listing you click in your results is the one that appears in the bottom right hand corner. Thanks for the kudos on the Broker names both on the search and under the listing.

I will pass your suggestion for the private label foreclosure.com API on to our BizDev team to have them investigate. Thanks for the tip. Keep sending us feedback as we are only looking to make Roost better.

I liked the old roost better. It worked better for me. The new one forgets my search criteria and sometimes it will refuse to change. It does this with me for Opera, IE 8 and Firefox.
  • Hello Alex,

We are working on a daily basis to try to make Roost the best experience possible. Would you be willing to talk with our development team on a conference call so we could get to the bottom of your troubles and make Roost a great experience in your eyes once again? Please send me an email to derek.overbey@roost.com and I will schedule something.

  • I like it, wasn't really a fan of the previous one to be honest. Clean & smooth interface

Zip code search is broken ...
Just searched Berkeley and only got 9 listings.
New UI is nice, but you gotta get the basics right.
  • Hello Real Estate Guy,

The zip code search is not broken. The listings in the system right now are coming out of SFAR. We are working diligently to get the East Bay, including Berkeley, up on our system. Because we form a relationship with the local MLS as well as brokers, it takes us a little longer to get areas up a running. Rest assured that we are working very hard to make this happen as soon as possible. We will be updating as soon as it goes live.
