Everything really is bigger in Texas! The Big D touts a population of 1.3 million making it the 3rd largest city in Texas and 9th in the nation. It is the seat of Dallas County. Founded in 1841, the city’s economy is largely based on banking, commerce, computer technology, energy, telecommunications and transportation. Oil and other historical economy boosters left a lengthy legacy for this big metropolis.

The city was originally established on the shores of the Trinity River. The river, however, has receded significantly due to 50-feet high levees built to protect the city from flooding. With a humid subtropical climate, Dallas experiences hot, humid summers and mild to chilly winters. Thank God for air conditioning, eh?! The weather lends itself to great outdoor activity year-round, though.

White Rock Lake is a man-made reservoir that provides recreational pleasure to the area in the form of boating, skiing, rowing, biking and jogging. Other bodies of water that surround the city are White Rock Creek, Bachman Lake, Lake Ray Hubbard, Mountain Creek Lake and North Lake. Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden will leave you breathless with its 66 acres of plentiful plant life.

You’ll find diverse architecture throughout the city, an eclectic mix that blends beautifully. Renowned restaurants also rest nicely in the downtown area. Zagat Survey, a rating medium, named the Ritz-Carlton and its restaurant the 2009 best U.S. hotel and 2009 best hotel restaurant. The arts are a big deal in Dallas. Opera, symphony, performing arts, visual arts and even graffiti art are found throughout the city. Murals cover many of the sides of the city’s buildings, sidewalks, bridges and even some streets.

Sports is a major enterprise here, too. The American Airlines Center stadium hosts games for the AFL team, the Dallas Desperados, NBA team, the Dallas Mavericks and NHL team, Dallas Allstars. The infamous Dallas Cowboys carry the city’s namesake, but actually call Irving, Texas home. You’ve got a major park system going on here in Dallas with lots of reserves, forests, trails and viewing areas. A bounty of public basketball courts, tennis courts and swimming pools are housed here, too.

Deep in the Bible belt, the city is host to a broad diversity of religions. Methodist, Baptist, Mormon, Muslim, Catholic, along with the Cathedral of Hope, the world’s largest gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender Protestant church. The community’s ethnicity is just as diverse.
So much to say about Dallas, and so little space. It’s all about what’s American and what makes America great – free enterprise, free speech and free education. You can’t go wrong in Dallas, Texas.
