A population of 108,874 makes Manchester the largest city in New Hampshire. The city is located about an hour’s drive northwest of Boston. Incorporated in 1846, Manchester had settled in on the mighty banks of the Merrimack River. It was first noted by the Pennacook Indians as Namoskeag, which means “good fishing place.” This reference was to the salmon runs on the Amoskeag Falls located in the Merrimack River. The city underwent several name changes and finally adopted its current name in 1810.
