The city was the site where Abraham Lincoln gave his Civil War speech in 1862 at the local train depot, which has since been torn down. A plaque was erected on the site to commemorate the event.
With Washington D.C. just 48 miles southeast and Baltimore just 49 miles east, it is seated conveniently close to high-power law makers. The city is known for its historical skyline, clusters of historical downtown buildings – many built prior to 1800, and the green Maryland hills as its backdrop.
With a population of only around 60,000, it’s surprising how much there is to do in Frederick. Go to a spa, visit a local museum, play 18 holes of golf, ice skate in the town’s NHL regulation rinks, watch sporting events at the Frederick SportsPlex, take in a live theater production, check out Crumland Farms Corn Maze, or just hike, bike or horseback ride through the trails of Gambrill State Park with scenic overlooks of the surrounding Catoctin Mountains.
Of course, being close to D.C. is an advantage, too! Attend the Art of African Exploration, take a gander at Strange Bodies: Figurative Works from the Hirshhorn Collection at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden or attend any other events at any of the many local museums. You’ll find a variety of subject matter, like evolution of flight, space exploration, cultural and ethnic themes.
Hidden Oaks Nature Center offers a Morning Bird Walk every week through August. Tudor Place provides self-guided garden tours of the estate’s 8+ acres or guided tours of the home’s silver collection, art, glassware and other furnishings. Brookside Gardens boasts a live butterfly event with you in the center of the activity. Berrywine Plantations hosts winery tours. Along with all the activity, you’ll find plenty of excellent education available in public and private schools, a deaf school and higher education facilities.
By now, you’re probably curious as to how much real estate would be in such a great locale. Here’s the skinny on the home situation. How about a comfy home in Kingsbrook for around $290,000 or a spacious 4-bedroom, 5-bath home in Ridgeview II for $969,000?
Plenty of other real estate is available in Mountain Village, Robin Meadows, The Abbey or any of the other area neighborhoods. There’s something somewhere in Frederick within your budget range.
