No, the city was not named after a previous U.S. President. Instead, it was named after a popular governor. In 1829, early settlers migrated to the area from New York via the Erie Canal. They named the community after their native state’s governor, DeWitt Clinton, who was primarily responsible for the building of the Erie Canal. The city became an integral center for trade due to its convenient location on the Chicago Road and the River Raisin.
Clinton is part of the Detroit greater metro area with a population of around 95,648. It sits about an hour southwest of Detroit as the crow flies. The city is seated in the River Raisin watershed. Birthed as Huron, the town later changed its name to Clinton due to another nearby town with the same name. It is Michigan’s most popular township due to its position on the River Raisin and all the local springs, brooks and rich lowlands.
Here, you’ll find excellent trout fishing, which is a popular past time. Clinton Parks & Recreation features a whole slew of activities for the entire family for the summer and the winter. Whether it’s workout classes, swimming instruction, sports or scheduled ski trips, you’ll find something for everyone, from pre-schoolers to seniors!
The city is home to an assortment of businesses like antiques, automotive, hardware, industrial, restaurants with down-home cooking, dentists, family doctors and an abundance of service-oriented businesses. It doesn’t fall short on real estate, either.
