The city was birthed in 1886 due to the building of the Oregon Short Line Railway. It began as a small railroad town, but eventually progressed into the bold, booming city that it is today. Agriculture became a prominent factor of growth with the advent of a new sugar factory in 1942, and continues to be of great importance to the area.
Nampa is located on the western edge of Idaho near the Oregon border. The city falls in Idaho’s Banana Belt, which experiences unusually temperate weather. It hosts the Idaho Center, an arena and amphitheater, with Taylor Swift, the Jonas Brothers, The Blazed and Confused Tour with Snoop Dogg and Slightly Stoopid, Metallica and others on its concert agenda. The Brandt Center, housed in the Northwest Nazarene University, showcases astounding art exhibits, entertaining and family-friendly performances and two luxurious VIP suites.
Some staple attractions and annual activities in Nampa are the Swiss Village Cheese Factory, the Canyon County Historical Museum, Parade America, Bull Riding Blowout, Fandemonium and Fiesta Idaho, an ethnic celebration commemorating Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1810. The Boise Kickoff Classic, a dance and clogging competition, is held at Northwest Nazarene University. Downtown Nampa Nights runs May through September and presents outdoor concerts for all.
Griddles and Fiddles Festival, Central Valley Fair and the Snake River Dayz, along with the Snake River Stampede Rodeo, are also on Nampa’s annual agenda. The elegant and spacious Nampa Civic Center is host to a covey of contentions and performing arts. The city wraps up the year’s events with the Canyon County Festival of Trees and the Living Christmas Tree.
Some of the recreational activities Nampa offers are fishing, water sports at Lake Lowell, 20 city parks with walking trails, 45-hole golf courses and a private 9-hole course, a recreation center with an indoor rock climbing wall, an indoor running track, a spa, five swimming pools, basketball courts and a senior center that caters to the young-at-heart. No doubt, there’s always something to do in Nampa.
