Do Agents Know What TGIF Is?

I’ve been in the real estate marketing/technology world for almost ten years now and one aspect of an agent’s life that I’ve always thought would be difficult for me is limited weekends. I was thinking this as I was taking the train into work this morning and thinking about my awesome weekend at the beach that I have planned with my family.

Now I know agents can take time off during the week but if the rest of your friends and family have a “typical” Monday thru Friday workweek, does that make it challenging when the weekend rolls around? As most people know, agents are usually very busy on the weekends with a multitude of projects including open houses, contracts, research, etc.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that as agents become more successful they tend to gain their weekends back because most agents new to the industry are usually willing to hold an open house to gain traction with their business.

So is this lack of “free” weekends a negative aspect of the real estate profession or do the positives make it worth the sacrifice? Inquiring minds want to know.

  • It's true. As a real estate agent you don't have weekends. You think that you could take time off during the week, but it just doesn't happen that way. You end up working from 9-5 just because everybody else is doing it. As a Realtor you have total freedom, but if you want to serve your clients and make good money, you have no freedom....
  • Everyday's Friday if you love what you do.

  • Thank God it's Friday
  • This actually came up last night in conversation at my son's football gathering; one of the little sisters there said something to my 5 yr old about it being Saturday, because it was a "stay home day." My child had no idea what day of the week it was...weekend days are the same as weekdays to our family. (especially in the summer!)

My husband is a local golf professional, so his days off are as bizarre as mine. It does make things more challenging, but we try to make sure that at least a couple times a month we have a weekend day where we are all home together.

Setting client expectations for when you have appointment time available is key to making sure you can take days off, whether during the week or on weekends. It's all a matter of how you want to run your business.
